Marvering

Immediately after the initial gather is made, the glass is uneven and loose. In order to create a smooth and even cylinder-like shape, as well as cool the outside skin of glass, the artist rolls the glass on top of a steel table. This table is called the marver. By creating an even shape on the end of the blowpipe, the artist prepares the glass to blow the initial air bubble.

The marver is used through out the process in many different ways. Artists will use the marver to create shape, chill the glass in order to balance temperature, roll the glass in order to smooth it, and use it during various coloring techniques.
